Watauga County jail records start with the Sheriff's Office. The Detention Center handles immediate custody questions, while a written request should seek the existing booking and release record from the Sheriff. The facility and Sheriff's Office are open around the clock, but general administrative work is ordinarily handled from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays except holidays. Those hours are not a guaranteed records-unit schedule, so confirm the request channel before visiting.

Different records belong to different offices. Use the route that matches the custody or legal event:

• For a Watauga release or booking record, use the full search and records path, then call detention or request the Sheriff's existing record.
• For state probation, parole, or post-release supervision, consult Probation & Parole and the current NCDAC District 24 directory.
• For a same-day county release question, use Jail Releases: 24 Hours. Watauga publishes no official online feed.

• For the local facility address and release process, open the Watauga County Detention Center page listed in the footer.
• For a sentenced North Carolina prisoner, use NCDAC OPI or the department's public-records instructions. NCDAC does not hold county-jail-only booking files.
• For a federal or indicated immigration case, use the Bureau of Prisons locator or ICE Online Detainee Locator and the related court record.

The older state resource sheet lists a Boone community-corrections address, but it may be stale. Verify that office before travel.
